On June 12, 1973, Brother Earl Thomas, Jr. joined the Carpenters Local Union based out of Ft. Worth, TX. At the time, it was Local 1822 then in 1987, merged with Local 429 in Arlington, TX, which is what it remains today. Richard Nixon was president, Brother Thomas was working for his father, and looking to strike out on his own. He just wanted something to do until he went back to college but ended up realizing he really loved the work and decided to pursue a career in construction, just like his father and grandfather.
Now retired, he looks back on his career favorably, recalling how he joined the Union, his mentor, Love Terrace, and the multiple projects he was involved in. He also spoke about his Union involvement, holding positions such as Trustee, Delegate, Regional Council President, Financial Secretary, Business Representative, and Director of Organizing.
Now Brother Thomas is retired and spends his days walking his two border collies, riding his bike, and playing golf. Also mentioning naps.
His advice for those who are trying to figure out their path in life is, “If you don’t know your path, join the Union! There are no student loans, you learn a trade and get a health plan. It’s not 9-5, 40 hours a week. Sometimes it’s 12-hour days, 7 days a week. Your schedule will vary but you will get time off to enjoy life.” He also encouraged those already in the Union to get involved within the organization by contacting their local council representative.
If you or someone you know would like to join the Union, visit our website www.centralsouthcarpenters.org or stop by the local nearest you.
Congratulations on all of your achievements, Brother Thomas.
