On April 13th, Carpenters from across the Central South Region gathered with council members Teri Castillo & Mario Bravo at San Antonio City Hall to raise awareness of the rampant employer tax fraud in the construction industry. Carpenters across the United States and Canada protested fraud in the construction industry through various events throughout the week of April 12th – 18th.
Tax Fraud involves subcontractors supplementing their workforces with workers supplied by labor brokers. To lower costs and win more bids, these labor brokers misclassify workers as independent contractors or pay them off the books.
Across the United States, tax fraud committed by construction contractors cost states and federal treasuries $8.4 billion a year. According to a study conducted by the UC Berkeley Labor Center, In Texas alone, almost half—46%—of construction worker families are enrolled in one or more safety net programs at a cost to the state and the federal government of almost $2 billion per year. There is a higher percentage of construction families on social services and a much lower national rate of construction workers covered by bargaining agreements.
50 Carpenter Union members of the Central South Regional Council with banners and posters supported fair employment practices in the construction industry at the following Day of Action event:
